Ending Steroid Dependence in Toddler Urticaria with Homeopathy

In September 2024, a bright, energetic two-year-old girl, Ms. R.B. (Patient ID: 55597), was brought to our Sasoon branch by her concerned parents. For the past 2–3 months, she had been struggling with daily episodes of urticaria—red, itchy, raised papular eruptions that primarily affected her arms, legs, and neck. The intensity of the itching, coupled with the heat and discomfort in the affected areas, made it distressing for both the child and her family.

Despite multiple conventional medications, including antihistamines like Atarax, Allegra, and Cetirizine, and intermittent use of Tab Deflazacort 1 mg SOS (mostly a 5-day course) , relief was temporary and unsatisfactory.

Homeopathic remedies such as Urtica urens 30 and Apis mellifica 200 had also been tried during acute episodes, with only short-term benefit.

Episodes were notably triggered by heat exposure and pressure, often requiring SOS intervention.

Family and Personal History

A deeper look into her case revealed a strong autoimmune predisposition:
Mother: Hypothyroidism
Paternal grandfather and uncle: Leprosy
Paternal grandmother: Psoriasis
Maternal uncle: Urticaria

R.B. was born via C-section due to maternal thyroid disorder. Despite being two years old, she was still breastfed. Her diet was mixed, her appetite was average, and she had a sweet tooth. Her bowel and urinary habits were normal.

She was a single child, active and expressive, with occasional irritability when hungry or her needs were unmet

After a detailed review, Dr. Rajesh Shah opted for a constitutional homeopathic approach. The case indicated deep miasmatic influences and a possible genetic predisposition. Based on her sensitivity, temperament, and clinical picture, Carcinosin 30 was prescribed along with other individualized homeopathic remedies.

Follow-Up Timeline

12th December 2024 (1st Follow-Up):
Parents reported a significant reduction in the frequency of urticaria episodes. A brief flare-up occurred after exposure to rain and was managed with a single dose of Tab Deflazacort 1mg.

21st January 2025 (2nd Follow-Up):
She was better with the last batch of medicines, but again, since 1 week, urticarial rash started appearing after having an upper respiratory tract infection. He had given Syp.Deflacort(6mg/5ml) daily 5 ml yet eruptions continue to reappear.

19th March 2025 (3rd Follow-Up):
Marked improvement noted. She remained symptom-free, and all conventional medicines were stopped. Her condition was stable with only homeopathic treatment.

22nd May 2025 (Latest Follow-Up):
Ms. R.B. was reported to be 60–70% better overall. Only one mild episode occurred (following rainy weather), which resolved without needing conventional medicine.

Conclusion:

This case highlights the efficacy of individualized homeopathic treatment in managing chronic urticaria in pediatric patients, especially where conventional therapy fails to deliver sustained relief. The gradual tapering and eventual cessation of corticosteroids and antihistamines without relapse underscore the treatment’s success. This case not only showcases homeopathy’s role in skin conditions but also reinforces its potential in addressing genetically predisposed autoimmune tendencies from early life with a gentle, holistic approach.
