What Causes Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition where the airways become sensitive, inflamed, and narrow in response to triggers. This can make breathing difficult and may cause coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
To understand the condition in detail, you can read more about asthma and its symptoms on the main disease page.
At Life Force Homeopathy, asthma evaluation focuses on the patientโs trigger pattern, cough type, wheezing, breathlessness, sleep disturbance, inhaler use, family history, allergy tendency, and overall health.
The real question is not only โwhy am I coughing?โ but โwhy are my airways reacting again and again?โ
Symptoms That May Appear with Asthma
others experience wheezing, chest tightness, breathlessness, or repeated attacks during the night, after exercise, or during seasonal changes.
In children, asthma may sometimes appear as repeated cough, frequent colds, chest congestion, noisy breathing, or difficulty running and playing comfortably. In adults, symptoms may affect sleep, work, travel, exercise, and daily confidence.
Coughing: A repeated dry cough or cough with mucus may occur, especially at night, early morning, after exercise, or during weather changes.
Wheezing: A whistling or musical sound while breathing may occur when the airways narrow during an asthma episode.
Breathlessness: Patients may feel difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, or the need to sit upright during an attack.
Chest Tightness: Some patients feel pressure, heaviness, or tightness in the chest, especially during flare-ups.
Night-Time Symptoms: Coughing, wheezing, or breathlessness may disturb sleep and make the next day tiring.
Exercise-Related Symptoms: Running, climbing stairs, sports, or intense activity may trigger coughing, chest tightness, or breathlessness in some patients.
Frequent Colds: Some children and adults notice that every cold turns into cough, wheezing, or chest congestion.
Seasonal Flare-Ups: Asthma symptoms may worsen during pollen seasons, winter, monsoon, pollution exposure, or weather changes.
Did You Know?
Asthma symptoms may not look the same every time. One episode may cause cough, another may cause wheezing, and another may mainly cause chest tightness or breathlessness.
This is why asthma needs proper evaluation of triggers, recurrence, severity, inhaler use, allergy tendency, and the patientโs overall respiratory health.
Common Causes and Triggers of Asthma
Allergies:
Dust mites, pollen, mold, pet dander, and indoor allergens may trigger asthma symptoms in sensitive patients.
Allergic asthma often worsens in certain seasons, dusty environments, or after exposure to known allergens.
Air Pollution and Smoke:
Vehicle pollution, industrial pollution, cigarette smoke, incense smoke, chemical fumes, and indoor smoke may irritate the airways.
These triggers can worsen coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness, especially in patients with sensitive lungs.
Cold Air and Weather Change:
Cold air, sudden temperature change, winter weather, or damp climate may trigger asthma symptoms in some patients.
Many patients notice more coughing or wheezing during early mornings, nights, or seasonal transitions.
Respiratory Infections:
Viral infections, frequent colds, sinus infections, or throat infections may trigger asthma flare-ups.
In children, repeated cold and cough episodes may sometimes worsen into wheezing or breathing difficulty.
Exercise and Physical Activity:
Exercise-induced asthma may cause coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, or breathlessness after running, sports, or intense activity.
This does not mean patients should avoid all activity. Proper guidance helps identify safe activity levels and triggers.
Family History and Allergy Tendency:
A family history of asthma, allergies, eczema, allergic rhinitis, or sinus issues may increase asthma tendency.
Genetic tendency does not mean every family member will develop asthma, but it can increase sensitivity.
Medicines and Chemical Exposure:
Certain medicines, strong smells, sprays, perfumes, cleaning agents, occupational dust, or workplace chemicals may trigger asthma in selected patients.
Occupational asthma should be considered if symptoms worsen at work and improve away from exposure.
Emotional Stress:
Stress does not directly cause asthma, but it may worsen breathing discomfort, sleep, immunity, and flare management.
Some patients notice symptoms during anxiety, emotional strain, exams, work pressure, or disturbed sleep.
Why Finding the Cause Is Not Always Simple
Many asthma patients look for one fixed trigger, but asthma often involves multiple factors. Dust, cold air, infections, pollution, allergies, exercise, stress, and family tendency may all contribute in different ways.
This is why two patients with asthma may have very different patterns. One may cough at night, another may wheeze after exercise, another may flare during winter, and another may worsen after every cold.
Asthma is not only a breathing problem. It is often an airway sensitivity pattern.
How Life Force Evaluates Asthma Causes
At Life Force, asthma is evaluated by studying the full pattern of symptoms, triggers, recurrence, and medicine dependency.
Dr. Rajesh Shah and the Life Force team study cough type, wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, sleep disturbance, allergy tendency, infection history, family history, inhaler or steroid use, and overall health before planning treatment.
Symptom Pattern: We study whether the patient has cough, wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, or night-time symptoms.
Trigger History: Dust, pollen, cold air, smoke, pollution, exercise, infections, stress, and seasonal changes are reviewed.
Recurrence Timeline: We check whether symptoms are occasional, seasonal, frequent, exercise-related, infection-related, or persistent.
Medicine History: Inhaler use, nebulization, steroids, antibiotics, temporary relief, and recurrence after stopping medicines are studied.
Overall Health: Allergy tendency, sinus issues, digestion, sleep, immunity, family history, and associated conditions are considered.
