What Is an Abscess?
An abscess is a localised collection of pus caused by infection or inflammation. A skin abscess commonly appears as a painful, warm and swollen lump. Its centre may gradually soften as pus accumulates beneath the skin.
A boil, medically known as a furuncle, develops when bacteria infect a hair follicle and the surrounding tissue. A group of connected boils is known as a carbuncle.
Although some small boils may drain naturally, larger, painful or recurring lesions should be examined by a doctor.
Factors Commonly Associated With Abscesses
- Repeated friction, shaving or sweating
- Obesity and deep skin folds
- Reduced immunity
- Close contact with an infected person
- Hidradenitis suppurativa
- Previous boils or bacterial colonisation

- Pain and swelling
- Fever or weakness
- Pus or discharge
- Scarring after healing
- Diabetes or immune-related conditions
Understanding Abscesses
How Does an Abscess Develop?
An abscess develops when the immune system responds to an infection. White blood cells move to the affected area to fight the infection. Dead cells, bacteria and tissue fluid can then accumulate and form pus.
The affected area may initially appear as a small, tender bump. It may gradually become larger, warmer and more painful. A yellow or white centre may become visible as pus moves towards the surface.
Common Symptoms of Boils
Common boils symptoms include:
- A painful red, purple or dark-coloured lump
- Local warmth and swelling
- Increasing tenderness
- A yellow or white pus-filled centre
- Discharge after the boil opens
- Itching or discomfort before the lump develops
- Fever or tiredness in more extensive infections
- Several connected boils
Redness may be less noticeable on brown or black skin. Therefore, warmth, swelling, tenderness and pain should also be considered.
Seek medical attention if the redness spreads, fever develops or the pain increases rapidly.
Causes and Triggers of Boils
The most common boils causes involve a bacterial infection of a hair follicle. Small cuts, shaving, friction or damaged skin may allow bacteria to enter the deeper tissues.
The risk of developing boils may also be higher in people with:
- Diabetes
- Eczema
- Obesity
- Reduced immunity
- Excessive sweating
- Frequent skin friction
- Poorly controlled blood sugar
- Close contact with an infected person
Sharing towels, razors, clothing or other personal items may contribute to the spread of bacteria.
What Causes Frequent Boils?
Possible frequent boils causes include recurring staphylococcal infection, diabetes, repeated skin trauma, chronic inflammatory skin conditions and bacterial spread through shared personal items. Read more about how Life Force assesses chronic and recurring health conditions.
Recurring painful lumps in the armpits, groin, buttocks or beneath the breasts may be associated with hidradenitis suppurativa. This condition requires evaluation by a dermatologist.
Types of Abscesses
Skin Abscess: A skin abscess is a pus-filled lump that develops within or beneath the skin. It may occur anywhere on the body but commonly affects the armpits, thighs, buttocks and areas exposed to friction.
Furuncle or Boil: A furuncle is a deeper infection involving one hair follicle and the surrounding tissue. It usually appears as a painful, swollen and pus-filled bump.
Carbuncle: A carbuncle is a cluster of connected boils affecting a wider and deeper area of skin. It may be accompanied by fever, fatigue or general weakness.
Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Hidradenitis suppurativa is a long-term inflammatory skin condition that can cause recurring painful lumps, abscesses, tunnels beneath the skin and scarring. It commonly affects the armpits, groin, buttocks and areas beneath the breasts.
Our Expertise
- At Life Force, our doctors have experience in managing patients with recurring boils and abscesses. Each case is studied in detail to understand the frequency, location, severity, triggering factors and associated medical conditions.
- Patients with recurring abscesses may have underlying factors such as diabetes, reduced immunity, hidradenitis suppurativa, repeated skin trauma or bacterial colonisation. Our doctors evaluate these factors before planning supportive treatment.
- With homeopathic treatment for boils, the aim is to manage the patient’s recurring tendency and support a reduction in the frequency and severity of future episodes.
- Homeopathic medicines may be considered as complementary support in suitable recurring cases. They do not replace antibiotics, incision and drainage or other medical treatment required for an active infection.
- Dr. Rajesh Shah’s extensive clinical experience in treating chronic and recurring conditions adds to Life Force’s structured approach to patient evaluation and follow-up care.Treatment for Boils and Abscesses
Treatment for Boils and Abscesses
Appropriate boils treatment depends on the size, location, severity and spread of the infection. Small and superficial boils may sometimes improve with warm compresses, but they should not be squeezed, cut or punctured at home because this may spread the infection. A large, deep or painful abscess may require incision and drainage by a qualified medical professional. For an example involving a different location, read this case study of recurrent anal abscesses and anal fistula. Antibiotics may also be prescribed when there is fever, cellulitis, spreading redness, recurrent infection, diabetes, reduced immunity or an increased risk of complications. At Life Force, homeopathy may be considered as complementary support for patients with a recurring tendency after the active infection and need for conventional medical treatment have been properly assessed.

FAQs on Abscesses and Boils
Answers by Dr Rajesh Shah, MD (Hom)
A boil is a type of skin abscess that begins in an infected hair follicle. The broader term “abscess” refers to a localised collection of pus that may develop in the skin or deeper tissues.
Some small and superficial boils may drain naturally with appropriate care. Larger, deeper or very painful abscesses may require professional drainage.
No. Squeezing or puncturing a boil may spread the infection into the surrounding tissue. Keep the area clean and seek medical advice if the boil becomes larger, more painful or is accompanied by fever.
Repeated boils in one area may be associated with persistent bacterial colonisation, friction, blocked hair follicles, scarring or hidradenitis suppurativa. A medical examination can help identify the cause.
Diabetes may increase susceptibility to infection, particularly when blood sugar is poorly controlled. A person experiencing frequent boils may be advised to have their blood glucose evaluated.
The boil itself does not spread through ordinary casual contact. However, bacteria from its discharge can spread through contaminated hands, towels, razors, clothing or surfaces.
Available evidence does not establish homeopathy as a proven preventive treatment for abscesses. At Life Force, it may be considered as complementary support after the active infection and possible underlying causes have been medically evaluated.
No. Homeopathy should not replace antibiotics or drainage when they are medically necessary. Delaying appropriate treatment for an active infection may allow it to spread.
Seek prompt medical care if you have fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, a facial boil, multiple connected boils, diabetes, reduced immunity or an abscess that is not improving.
You may initially consult a general physician or dermatologist. Depending on the size, depth and location of the abscess, a surgeon may be required for drainage.
