Hives (urticaria) is a condition where itchy, raised, and reddish areas develop on the skin due to the allergic reaction to a medication, food, or a reaction to an irritant in the environment. Those substances that cause an allergic reaction are called allergens.

The following are the most common allergens that can cause urticaria.

  • Foods (such as nuts, chocolate, fish, tomatoes, eggs, fresh berries, soy, wheat, and milk.)
  • Pet dander
  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Insect bites or stings
  • Medications (primarily antibiotics Anticoagulant, Anticonvulsants, cancer drugs, etc.)

Signs and Symptoms of Hives (urticaria) include:

  • Red or skin-colored raised areas, which can appear anywhere on the body
  • Severe itching with burning
  • Painful swelling of the lips, inside the throat, and eyelids. This condition is called angioedema.
  • A tendency for signs and symptoms to flare with triggering factors, such as heat, exercise, and stress
  • Individuals suffering from chronic hives may experience symptoms for months or years.

Complications due to Hives:
Anaphylaxis is a serious condition. It is a severe allergic reaction that can affect the whole body. This condition can lead to serious complications, such as breathing difficulties and loss of consciousness. It can be a medical emergency. If it is not treated quickly, it might prove fatal.
Diagnosis of Urticaria:
Physical examination
To find out what is causing urticaria along with the physical examination and health history, the following tests are done.
1.Allergy tests (on the skin or blood tests)
2.Blood work (to rule out an illness or infection)
3.A skin biopsy

Fortunately, you have homeopathy to treat urticaria. Let’s have a look at a case of urticaria that was treated with homeopathy effectively.

A 73-year-old lady (PIN: 41242) started treatment for her urticaria from Life Force Homeopathy on 21st September 2019. She was suffering from urticaria for 1 year.

Mostly, she was getting urticarial rashes on her abdomen, thighs, and forearm. She often used to suffer from a severe episode of urticaria once or twice a week, and the episode used to last for half an hour to one hour. She often had to take antihistamines to relieve her symptoms when they were very severe. The patient was suffering from a severe heat-like sensation in the affected area along with severe itching.

When asked about her family history, we learned that even her sister was suffering from the same complaint.

Her history of illness was also asked as the part of case taking. She told us that she had undergone a hysterectomy (the removal of the uterus) in 2006. Her family history of illness was also asked.

Her past and current treatment details were also asked and updated.
Also, all her medical reports were updated for future reference. Her IgE value was 417, which was high as per her reports taken on 27th April 2019.
A detailed case taking was done after considering both her mental and physical generals.

The patient was a vegetarian. Her appetite was normal. She had cravings for sweets and spicy foods and an aversion to sour food. Her thirst was average, and she used to drink 2 liters of water daily. She was experiencing average perspiration, and she couldn’t bear extreme climate. Her bowel movements were satisfactory, and she had no urinary symptoms. She enjoyed a sound sleep and had no recurrent dreams.

Her mental generals were also asked. She had a very happy childhood with a supportive family.  But, after marriage, she started facing constant frictions with her in-laws. She was a very reserved lady, and she tried to keep all her emotions and worries suppressed. She was also very sensitive to reprimands. Currently, her main anxiety was about her health. Her intellectual sphere was also considered. Her memory, perception, intelligence, logic, and analysis all were average.

Her general and physical examination was done and her BP (120/80mmhg) and weight (55kgs) were noted and updated.

Dr. Shah reviewed the whole case and prescribed a suitable medicine to the patient. Also, the patient was given all the necessary videos and the diet chart explaining her disease condition.

Follow-Ups:

The first follow-up was done in October 2019. There was no change in her symptoms, and the patient still had to take antihistamines.

The second follow-up was done in December 2019, and the patient was better by 10% in her relief in itching. Still, the patient had to take antihistamine during the severe attack.

By February 2020, the patient’s frequency, severity, and dependency on allopathic medicine were reduced.

By April 2020, the patient’s relief was better by almost 80% with respect to hives that she used to get during the attack and the itching and heat-like sensation that was associated with her complaint. She was taking antihistamines very rarely and that was a good sign.

By August 2020, her relief in the symptoms improved further. Also, she had stopped taking antihistamines. The patient was very happy and thankful for Dr. Shah’s treatment at Life Force Homeopathy.

Conclusion

This case illustrates that homeopathy works brilliantly in treating cases of urticaria. It works at the root level and aims at reducing the frequency, severity, and dependency on conventional medicines. Homeopathy ensures to provide a safe and permanent solution to conditions, such as urticaria, irrespective of any age group.
