Sustained Improvement in Ankylosing Spondylitis with Homeopathy

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic, progressive, inflammatory autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the axial skeleton—especially the sacroiliac joints and spine. It typically presents with persistent back pain and stiffness and, in advanced stages, can lead to spinal fusion, severely affecting mobility and quality of life.

Homeopathy has a valuable role in the supportive management of ankylosing spondylitis. It is especially effective in early and moderate stages, where it can help in symptom control, emotional balance, and improving life quality without conventional drugs.

CASE STUDY:

Mrs. N. V., a 32-year-old female (Patient Pin - 54747), consulted our Malleswaram Branch on 8.6.2024 with complaints of ankylosing spondylitis.

She presented with pain and stiffness in the hip joint (Rt) and low back radiating to the thigh. Stiffness in the back and mild pain in the back of the neck, which affected her daily activities and quality of life significantly. Her symptoms were typically worse in the morning, after first motion, and on physical exertion.

At the time of consultation, she was undergoing physiotherapy during severe episodes but was not on any conventional medications.

A diagnostic evaluation confirmed HLA-B27 positive status, commonly associated with ankylosing spondylitis.

During the initial consultation, a comprehensive case history was taken, with special focus on both her physical complaints and mental health state.

Physical Generals:

The patient had an average appetite without any specific cravings or aversions to certain foods. Her appetite and thirst were normal; bowel and urinary symptoms were normal. Her sleep pattern was normal.

The patient also reported a history of PCOD, with irregular menstrual cycles extending up to 45 days.

Family History and Background:

The patient was married, and she and her husband both were working at an MNC company. Her parents both were diabetic.

Past medical or surgical history:

There was no significant past medical or surgical history noted.

Mental state:

The patient was expressive and anxious. She reported experiencing guilt and frustration related to work-life stress, which impacted her emotional well-being.

Based on a thorough assessment of her case, Dr. Rajesh Shah prescribed the constitutional homeopathic remedy Medorrhinum 200 selected to address both her physical symptoms and emotional state.

Follow-up and Progress:

After 2 months of medication, on 25.08.2024, on her first follow-up.

There was increased pain and stiffness in the right hip joint, with radiation to the legs. Pain episodes were occurring daily, mostly at night. Backache and neck stiffness had improved. She was not on any medications.

On 06.11.2024, the patient reported marked clinical improvement, with pain and stiffness reduced to 2–3 episodes per week. She had discontinued physiotherapy independently in July.

On 19.01.2025, the patient showed overall improvement, particularly in the lower extremities.

Both the frequency and severity of episodes had reduced considerably. She remained stable without requiring painkillers.

On 25.03.2025, the patient was significantly better, with no current episodes of pain or stiffness, including in the lower limbs.

She had delivered a child via C-section in February. Despite this, she remained stable.

There was no need for painkillers or ongoing treatment.

Her condition remained stable. She required no ongoing medication and decided to pause treatment due to her post-delivery rest.

She expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Shah and the entire Life Force team for their dedicated care and successful treatment.

Conclusion:

This case demonstrates the potential role of individualized homeopathic treatment in managing Ankylosing Spondylitis. The patient showed consistent improvement in pain, stiffness, and mobility without the use of conventional medications. Her condition remained stable even during the postpartum period, indicating sustained benefits. This highlights how a holistic, constitutional approach can support long-term symptom control and improve quality of life in chronic autoimmune conditions.
