Hair Fall

Hair fall is a common condition that can affect one's self-confidence. While many commercial products are applied externally to the scalp, hair fall is often linked to internal factors such as hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, stress, and genetic tendency. Long-term management, therefore, requires addressing these underlying causes. Homeopathy approaches hair fall holistically by supporting internal balance through carefully selected oral medicines. Treatment aims to address hormonal factors, stress-related effects, and individual constitutional tendencies, along with guidance on diet, stress management, and lifestyle.

Dr. Rajesh Shah's Insights on Hair Fall

Hair growth and hair loss are closely linked to overall health, nutrition, hormonal balance, lifestyle, stress, and genetic tendencies. According to Dr. Rajesh Shah, MD, internal imbalances are best addressed through internal medicines, particularly homeopathy. Hair fall is often a reflection of underlying internal imbalance rather than merely a local scalp issue.

With a personalized approach, attention is given to overall health, scalp condition, and emotional well-being, aiming to support healthy hair growth in a safe and holistic manner.

What is Hair Fall?

Hair fall refers to the loss of hair from the scalp or other parts of the body and is a common concern affecting people of all age groups. Some amount of daily hair loss is normal, as hair naturally follows a growth cycle consisting of the growth (anagen), transition (catagen), and resting (telogen) phases. Hair is made up of keratinized cells, and as older hairs complete their life cycle, they shed to make way for new growth. On average, the loss of about 70 to 100 hair strands per day is considered normal and usually does not require treatment.

Hair fall becomes a concern when the rate of hair loss increases suddenly, persists for a prolonged period, or exceeds normal levels, leading to visible thinning or bald patches. It may present in various forms, such as pattern baldness in men and women, diffuse hair shedding, or patchy hair loss seen in conditions like alopecia areata.

Several factors can contribute to excessive hair fall, including hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, stress, illness, genetic predisposition, aging, and certain medical treatments. Understanding hair fall involves recognizing that it is often a sign of an underlying internal imbalance rather than merely a surface-level scalp issue. A proper evaluation of the type, cause, and duration of hair fall is essential for choosing an appropriate, individualized management approach.

Understanding Hair Fall

Understanding Hair Fall

Hair Growth Cycle

Hair growth occurs in three natural stages—growth, regression, and resting. Each hair follicle passes through these phases in a fixed sequence, allowing hair to grow, stop growing, and eventually shed before new hair forms. Normally, about 85% of scalp hair remains in the growth stage at any time. Daily hair loss of 70 to 100 hairs is considered normal. Treatment is generally considered only when hair loss increases suddenly or exceeds this normal range.

Male Pattern Baldness

It is a common type of hair loss in men, primarily caused by genetic factors and hormonal changes, the transformation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is implicated in the process, causing a reduction in the size of hair follicles. The typical progression of male pattern baldness begins with thinning of hair at the temples and crown, potentially leading to partial or complete baldness in certain individuals. A key feature of male pattern baldness (MPB) is the receding hairline and reduced hair volume on the crown. MPB is not curable with homeopathy.

Female Pattern Baldness

FPB is a type of hair loss that affects women, characterized by widening of the part line, reduced hair density, and increased visibility of the scalp. Like male pattern baldness, it is influenced by genetic and hormonal factors, particularly fluctuations in androgen hormones such as testosterone and DHT. This particular type of hair loss is usually associated with a gradual thinning of hair throughout the scalp, rather than distinct receding hairlines or patches of baldness.

Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium presents as a transient hair loss condition marked by an abnormal shedding of hair from the scalp. It occurs when a substantial number of hair follicles undergo premature entry into the telogen (resting) phase due to physiological or psychological stressors. Telogen effluvium is often set off by childbirth, surgery, illness, significant weight loss, changes in hormone levels, medication side effects, and emotional stressors. Typically, hair shedding starts around 2-3 months after the initial trigger and may last for several months before spontaneously resolving.

Alopecia Areata

It is an autoimmune condition wherein the immune system mistakenly attacks its healthy hair follicles causing inflammation and hair loss. It is characterized by patchy hair loss on the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or other areas of the body. Though the exact cause of alopecia areata remains unknown, it is believed that a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors could be implicated. Hair loss in alopecia areata may range from small, coin-sized patches (alopecia areata) to complete loss of scalp hair (alopecia totalis) or body hair (alopecia universalis). While hair loss in alopecia areata can be unpredictable and recurrent, spontaneous regrowth of hair is possible in some cases, although it may take months or years.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss can occur due to multiple factors affecting the normal hair growth cycle, such as hormonal, genetic, nutritional, stress-related, and others.  Hormonal imbalances such as PCOS, thyroid disorders, pregnancy, or childbirth may trigger hair loss. Poor nutrition, especially deficiencies of proteins, vitamins, iron, and zinc, weakens follicles. Scalp trauma, tight hairstyles, heat styling, chemical treatments, illness, radiation, chemotherapy, aging, genetics, emotional stress, systemic diseases, skin disorders, gender-related hormonal changes, and rapid weight-loss diets also contribute to increased hair loss.

Homeopathic Treatment

Hair loss is often a chronic condition and therefore requires constitutional homeopathic treatment. Homeopathy focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of hair fall rather than only the symptoms. A well-selected homeopathic remedy can help control the extent of hair loss, though established baldness cannot be reversed. Homeopathic medicines, prepared from plant, mineral, and animal sources, are chosen on an individual basis after detailed case evaluation, considering factors such as hormonal imbalance, nutrition, emotional stress, and overall health.

Treatment Duration

Initial improvement in hair fall may be seen within 8 to 10 weeks, though the overall duration of treatment varies from patient to patient. The length of treatment mainly depends on the severity of hair loss, the extent of spread such as in alopecia areata, the duration of the problem, and the presence of associated systemic illnesses like hyper- or hypothyroidism. Ongoing use of chemical agents or medications, including steroids or antihypertensive drugs, may also influence treatment duration.

Diet for Hair Care

Hair is an important accessory of the skin that protects the scalp from injury and sun exposure and reduces heat loss. A nutritious diet along with exercise helps maintain the shine, strength, and health of hair. Since hair is mainly made of protein, foods such as meat, fish, milk, cheese, eggs, yogurt, and soybean are important. Adequate iron intake from green leafy vegetables and dates supports oxygen supply to hair. Vitamins like folic acid, vitamin B12, and vitamin E, proper hydration, and regular oil massage help nourish hair follicles and support the hair growth cycle.
