At the time of consultation, he presented with persistent, pricking pain in the sternum and the left costosternal junction, occasionally radiating to the left axillary region and neck. The pain was continuous and of mild to moderate intensity, and tenderness was noted at the affected sites.

Although cough was not a regular feature, it was occasionally triggered by seasonal flu, which exacerbated the pain.
