Homeopathic management of chronic childhood urticaria with lasting relief results

Master NS(Patient ID: 46896), a 6-year-old child, visited our Borivali clinic in December 2021 with complaints of Urticaria from which he had been suffering for 6 months. The episodes started after he shifted to Mumbai from Rajasthan. The Urticaria was quite severe, involving swelling over the eyes, lips, and genitals. The urticarial episodes were mainly triggered in the mornings. Parents noted that the intake of fermented foods and besan items triggered the episodes, but sometimes the episodes occurred without any apparent cause.

The child and his family were under noticeable distress due to the Urticaria. The persistent itching of the skin made the otherwise happy child irritable. He also refused to take conventional medicines because of the taste. At the time of starting the treatment, he was taking half a tablet of Moon FX (antihistamine) and Half a tablet of tab Defolt 30 (immunosuppressant) 

On enquiring about the family history of allergies, we got to know that his paternal grandfather had asthma, and his mother was suffering from allergic rhinitis (a condition where the patient gets continuous sneezing, itching in the nose, ears, throat, and eyes, and a runny nose on exposure to allergens). This explained his reason for getting Urticaria; he was predisposed to such allergic issues since it was in his genes. Also, his skin was quite sensitive and easily turned red.

Physical generals:

He was a vegetarian and loved curd and kadhi. His water intake was not much. He was intolerant of hot weather and wanted a fan year-round, including winter. He sweated profusely on his forehead. His bowel habits were regular. His sleep was sound. His birth history was normal, with a full-term, uncomplicated delivery and all typical milestones. His mother enjoyed good health during her pregnancy.

The patient was a senior KG student. He was generally a happy child except for the episodes that made him irritable. He had a marked fear of darkness.

Dr Shah analysed all these case details and prescribed homeopathic medicine for his condition.

Shortly after starting the treatment, the patient experienced a severe Urticaria episode with swelling of the lips and eyes after consuming paneer paratha with curd. He was advised to avoid curd and paneer.

Follow-Up:-

First follow-up:

During his visit on January 23, 2022, the frequency of episodes decreased by 50% in the first month. The episodes initially occurred on alternate days, then only one episode in the past 15 days, affecting only the eyes. The conventional medication was stopped.

Between the follow-up, there were two episodes. The first was triggered by methi paratha, causing swelling of the right eye. The second time, the parents observed small lesions on the body after paneer consumption, confirming sensitivity. The parents were again instructed to stop the paneer completely.

Second follow-up:

Onwards: No further Urticaria episodes were reported for 6 weeks. During this time, the patient's parents informed the child of developing constipation issues. Nutritional counselling was done. He was advised to increase water intake, as it is summer, and to add seasonal fruits and salads to the diet. So post this correction, the bowels returned to normal. Since these were tiny, sweet pills, the patient enjoyed taking them and very much looked forward to the time of the dose.

Final follow-up;

From June to November 2022, the patient reported 1-2 episodes of Urticaria at each follow-up. Post there were no episodes after November, and the patient stopped his treatment.

The parents said that he has returned to his original cheerful self as the Urticaria episodes have subsided.

Conclusion:

This case demonstrates that homeopathic remedies offer a safe, effective, and long-term solution for the management of chronic Urticaria in children by strengthening the child’s immunity and addressing sensitivity to allergens over time. Homeopathy is a holistic science, and in this case, the remedies helped to resolve both acute and chronic episodes by effectively addressing the genetic predisposition, such as a family history of allergies.
