Homeopathic Management of Nephrotic Syndrome in a 46-Year-Old Female
Patient Details: Age/Sex: 46-year-old female Presenting Complaints: Persistent high proteinuria, generalized edema, weakness, left-sided chest and abdominal pain, poor appetite, aversion to sweets and milk, sensitivity to cold, headache in sun. Past History: Hysterectomy in 1994 due to ovarian cyst. Social History: Married, living with two sons; reported stressful home environment and emotional distress due to husband’s irritable and abusive behavior. Clinical Findings: 24-hour urine protein (22nd Dec 2006): 1589 mg/day (Normal <150 mg/day) Urine routine: Protein 2++ Physical: Swelling over the body, including face and legs Emotional/Mental: Depression, sadness, feelings of neglect, duty-bound attitude toward children Homeopathic Intervention: Prescribed by Dr. Shah: Magnesium Carbonicum (Mag Carb) on 22nd December 2006 Follow-Up and Response: After 1 Month: Weakness reduced Chest and abdominal pain substantially decreased Mood improved; reported 50% improvement in depression Patient appeared fresher and more energetic After 3 Months (13th Mar 2007): 24-hour urine protein reduced to 267 mg/day Urine routine: Protein 1+ Reported overall improvement in all symptoms After 6 Months (12th June 2007): 24-hour urine protein: 55 mg/day (within normal range) Triglycerides: 158 mg/dL Serum proteins: 6.79 g/dL Serum albumin: 4.41 g/dL Patient reported feeling fresh, energetic, and active Outcome: Significant improvement in proteinuria and clinical symptoms Biochemical parameters returned to normal No corticosteroids required during the course of treatment Demonstrates the potential efficacy of individualized homeopathic therapy in managing nephrotic syndrome Conclusion: This case highlights the potential of homeopathy in managing nephrotic syndrome, achieving symptomatic relief, normalization of laboratory parameters, and overall improvement in quality of life without the use of steroids.

Case history
Forty six years old lady came to the clinic for treatment of Nephrotic Syndrome. She was suffering from this illness from the past 3 years. She was having a persistently high protein loss in urine. Her 24 hours urine protein on 22nd December, 2006 was 1589 mg/day. (The normal value is less than 150 mg/day.) Her urine routine showed Protein 2 ++.
She complained of weakness and swelling over the whole body, and she was having swelling on her face and legs. Her 24 hours urine proteins were persistently high, current reading was 1589 mg/day. She also complained of left sided chest pain. She had pain in the left side of her abdomen. She looked very sad and depressed.
She had a poor appetite. She had an aversion for sweets and milk. She was sensitive to cold air and winter. She had undergone a hysterectomy in 1994 due to ovarian cyst. She complained of headache in the sun.
She was staying with her husband and two sons. Her husband was irritable and dominating by nature, he would get violent and abusive. She underwent a very stressful life; she would feel neglected and would feel deeply anguished. She was sad and unhappy. She felt anger and vexation and sometimes felt like leaving the house, but she always tolerated everything for her children. She would feel duty bound towards her children and she took up there responsibility, looked after there well being and education. Both her children became engineers.
Dr. Shah studied her case in detail and prescribed her Mag Carb on 22nd December, 2006.
First followup
After a month she reported that her weakness had reduced, her chest pain and pain in abdomen also reduced very substantially. She also looked fresh and happier; she reported 50 % improvement in her depression. She was feeling overall fresh.
Second followup
Patient repeated her 24 hours urine protein after three months of treatment and her 24 hours urine protein on 13-3-07 was 267 mg/day. Her 24 hours urine protein on 22nd December, 2006 was 1589 mg/day. (The normal value is less than 150 mg/day.) Her urine routine showed Protein 1+. She reported overall improvement in all her complaints.
Third followup
Patient repeated her 24 hours urine protein on 12th June, 2007, it came at 55. Patient reported feeling very fresh, energetic and active. She also reported that her Triglycerides (158) and her serum Proteins (6.79) and her serum Albumin (4.41) had all come back to normal levels.
Conclusion
These reports are confirmatory of overall improvement, and it also denotes the potential of homeopathic medicines in this serious auto immune disease. Patient did not require steroids in the entire course of treatment.
